Koto - A Japanese Instrument

The koto (箏) is a Japanese plucked half-tube zither and the national instrument of Japan. It has historical roots in the Chinese zheng and se, as well as similarities to instruments like the Mongolian yatga, the Korean gayageum and ajaeng, the Vietnamese đàn tranh, the Sundanese kacapi, and the Kazakh jetigen.

The traditional Koto often employs 13 strings placed over movable bridges to facilitate tuning adjustments, as various pieces may require different tunings.
